Welcome to the Brookline Labrador Retriever Rescue (BLRR) website. BLRR was started in 1997 with a single volunteer saving a single lab. Since then the rescue has grown in numbers and geographically. In 2005, we had 73 volunteers and placed 90 dogs into their very own forever homes.
BLRR is a 501(c)(3) non-profit volunteer organization funded entirely by donations. Because we depend on donations to operate, we attend many pet fairs and fund-raising events. Our organization has grown enough to sponsor our own Pet Fair/Walk called Paws Across PA, to raise funds to help our four-legged friends. To find out if we will be at a fair in your locale, please see our Upcoming Events section of this site. Each year our Paws Across PA event becomes bigger and better, raising more donations, which in turn allows us to help more labs. BLRR volunteers live in many parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, we even have a foster home in Northern Delaware! If you would like to see if you are located in our coverage area, please see our Coverage Area maps section.
Our volunteers work with shelters to evaluate dogs in danger of being euthanized because they are not finding homes through the shelter and room needs to be made for the unending flow of incoming dogs. Our volunteers evaluate these dogs to the best of their ability to make sure that the dogs will make a great pet before we place them into one of our BLRR Foster Homes. Once approved to become a Brookline dog, the dogs are examined by a veterinarian, brought up-to-date (UTD) on vaccinations, and spayed or neutered, if needed. These dogs remain in the Foster Homes for a minimum of 2 weeks, so the foster families can gain insight into the dogs' personalities and offer potential new families more information about the dogs' needs.
We also help people who can no longer care for their labs by evaluating them using the same criteria as our shelter dogs. These dogs may be listed as Owner Surrenders on their website write-ups. These dogs also must be UTD on vaccinations and must test heartworm negative and/or be on heartworm preventive. These dogs remain in their owners' homes until new homes can be found to meet their needs and personalities.
Brookline is always looking for volunteers. Foster Homes are always needed; however, there are many other things that our volunteers do to help out our four-legged friends that require less time commitments. Please see our Become a Volunteer section of the site, to see if there is some way you may be able to help.
You may also help these dogs by making a Donation or by using our Shopping link. Donations are always welcome and gratefully appreciated. The adoption donations we collect help defray costs for veterinary care, including vaccinations and spay/neuter surgery; however, costs are not covered for all the labs we help. Sometimes, we have dogs with special needs that require extra vet care. Extra medical care means extra veterinary expenses. If you would like to make a general donation, please visit the Donations section of the site. You can make a donation to directly help defray costs for our special needs dogs by donating to the Bright Horizons Fund, also located on the Donations page.
We hope you enjoy visiting our website and if you have any questions about our Rescue, labs in general or rescue in general, please contact us at info@brooklinelabrescue.org.
